Venezia e rovinata...non e la citta di una volta...
Venice is ruined...it is not the Venice of the past...the e above should be accented but our Irish keyboards don't accommodate Italian words very well, alas.
Venezia is rovinata because there are too many tourists there, god knows how many million come each year. Except for the dire times of New Year's and Carnival, I have not seen the place so busy in the past ten years. The streets, the narrow calles, the bridges, and the worst were the crazily overcrowded vaporetti (waterbuses). Finally, there is a overwhelming quantity of vendors selling junk masks, souvenirs, fake Murano glass, and other assorted kitsch, day and night. Laurie and I have decided we could not live there again, alas.
The restaurants are more expensive than when we left, including our favourite on the Zattere, "da Gianni".
Prior to this visit, I was wondering how I would feel once there in Venice and how I would feel about returning to Dublin. Would I try to convince Laurie that we might think about returning to live there....but we voted with our passports and are happy to be home in Dublin's fair city.
The photo you see is of the Ponte di Paglia adjoining the Doge's Palace and from which one can view the famous Bridge of Sighs except when the Bridge of Sighs is covered in advertising (similar to the blue signage visible on the exterior of the Doge's Palace in the photo). I think it is an ad for a watch or a parrot.
They should ban such means advertising, and this is just the beginning of it.what will Venice look like when every meter is covered with an advert. its sad that such a city is beginning to fall in the hands of companies.Preserve the city of love. It's one thing to go to a Venice hotel full of luxury and totally another thing when taking a walk in Venice and seeing adverts.
