Thursday, Laurie and I are returning to Venice for a week. I am lookng forward to it very much....not only because we'll be seeing old friends again, but also the beauty of Venice is overwhelming and, as my blog readers know, I miss the place very much.
Our first evening will see us with Alan Benjamin, a good friend, famous singer Russell Oberlin, and Mike and Annie Lanigan at Ristorante da Gianni on the Zattere. I think that Laurie and I were Gianni's best customers over the last ten years. It will be an emotional reunion. The waiters are Sergio, Alfonso, Vittorio and Bruno.
In Italy, titles are important. When the owners of Gianni's discovered that I conducted art tours around Venice, they decided I was a professor and, thus, I was addressed at Gianni's for the subsequent 9 years as "il professore". Laurie and I got a kick out of it. Also, I often recommended Gianni's to my clients which was helpful to both Gianni's and to me.
The best thing about Gianni's is that it is directly on the water (the Giudecca Canal) and has a great view of the expanse of water over to the Giudecca itself.
